Every Summer Has A Story… The Alpine Adventure!
After exploring the land of la dolce vita (the sweet life), Italy, it was time to savor the beauty of the majestic Alps, medieval towns, shimmering lakes, picturesque villages, an endless stretch of greenery, not forgetting the delectable chocolates – that is what Switzerland is all about and so began my Alpine Adventure!
Switzerland’s scenic beauty is too beautiful to describe! The moment we stepped onto Swiss soil, we were welcomed by the magnificent snow-capped mountains and lovely lakes. Our first stop was the site of the world’s first revolving cable cars in the Alps – Mt. Titlis! You get transported to the top of the peak in a cable car that connects Engelberg to the summit of Klein Titlis through the three stages of Gerschnialp, Trubsee, and Stand. The last part of the cable car way leads above the glacier and gives you a top of the world feeling. With vast stretches of snow slopes, it’s a haven for skiing enthusiasts and hikers.
Once there, we were left spellbound with the beauty of this snow paradise at 10,000ft high! We began our snow adventure by walking across the Titlis Cliff Walk, Europe’s highest suspension bridge. You really need to be a brave heart to walk the entire stretch! But the view of the deep valleys below is simply amazing! We then rode on the Ice Flyer chair that sailed us smoothly from the mountain station to the snow park on the glacier.
Up next, was my favorite – the speedy sled! Initially, I was scared to bits to ride the sled until I saw a woman who was around 40 years old pick up a sled and zoom down the slope. I gathered up all the courage I could, grabbed a sled and off I went down the slope, whisking up snow all the way and did it not just once but three times!
We also rode in the revolving Rotair, an aerial cable car that gives a 360-degree panoramic view of the snow-capped paradise. The last activity at Mt. Titlis was building a snowman (Another check off of my bucket list) and hurling snowballs at each other. The vastness of this place makes you realize what a tiny place you occupy in the world.
On our way back from Mt. Titlis, we headed to the beautiful city of Lucerne, famous for its lake of Lucerne. It’s a city of town squares and medieval architecture. We could see the magnificent Alps from the lake. One can just sit by the Lucerne lake for hours together and enjoy the panoramic view of the scenic landscape. We then moved towards two famous historic landmarks and the center of attraction of Lucerne – the Chapel Bridge (The Kapellbrucke) and the Water Tower (Wasserturm).
The Chapel Bridge is a covered wooden footbridge and the oldest in Europe spanning diagonally across the River Reuss. The bridge is adorned internally with paintings dating back to the 17th century. Most of these paintings along with a large part of this historic bridge were destroyed in a major fire in 1993. Subsequently, the bridge was completely restored within a year.
The Water Tower, on the other hand, served as a dungeon, an archive, and a torture chamber till the 14th century and ultimately became a state treasury.
We then headed back to our hotel for a sumptuous dinner and to get ready for our next destination.
Mark Twain remarked, “Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do.” So pack your bags and fly off for an Alpine adventure!
