As a Director and Tech Head in an IT company, I’ve had the opportunity to work with multiple generations, including the unique Gen Z workforce. While they differ from previous generations, their individuality and adaptability can be truly inspiring when understood and harnessed. Here are some insights on what makes Gen Z tick:

  1. Individualistic Mindset: Gen Z prides itself on individuality. Each member has unique strengths, and they appreciate being recognised for who they are.
  2. Direct Communication: They are upfront about their needs and expectations. If changes are required, they appreciate clear reasons and transparent discussions.
  3. Fast Learners with Focus Needs: Gen Z absorbs information quickly but can feel overwhelmed by excess details. Teaching them how to filter information can be invaluable.
  4. Value Humour: Humour is a bonding tool. Making them laugh helps create trust and relatability.
  5. Seek Genuine Connections: Many Gen Z-ers feel isolated. Showing a personal interest and offering mentorship builds loyalty and engagement.
  6. Independent by Nature: While peer pressure affects them less, many are new to teamwork. Teaching collaboration can turn them into effective team players.
  7. Empathy Requires Encouragement: Often, they need guidance in empathy and considering others’ perspectives, especially in professional settings.
  8. Efficient Learners: With the right direction and clarity, they learn remarkably fast—just keep instructions clear and purposeful.
  9. Need for Validation: More than financial rewards, they crave kindness, recognition, and support. They benefit greatly from a nurturing environment.
  10. Prioritise Enjoyment Over Balance: Gen Z seeks meaning in their work, not just balance. Aligning their tasks with their passions can yield exceptional results.
  11. Natural Communicators: Though they may prefer brief digital interactions, they’re capable of excellent communication. Gradually encourage face-to-face engagement to enhance these skills.
  12. Learning Value Over Cost: Teaching them to understand value beyond cost—both in work and life—can help shape their financial and professional priorities.
  13. Not Money-Driven: While they want financial security, they often discover that fulfilment goes beyond money. Mentoring them on this can lead to personal growth.
  14. Embrace Change: They thrive on novelty and challenges. Providing new experiences and shifting goals keeps them engaged and motivated.
  15. Passion Projects: Involving them in ambitious projects energises them. They love exploring new ideas and tackling “impossible” challenges.
  16. Fit Matters: Forcing them into roles misaligned with their strengths or interests can lead to frustration. Instead, show them options and allow them to choose paths that resonate.
  17. Sensitive to Structure: They may be more fragile than previous generations, given unique family structures. Instilling values and emphasising collaboration over competition fosters resilience.
  18. Thrive on Kindness: Gen Z benefits from kindness and empathy in the workplace. A supportive environment boosts their productivity and morale.
  19. Mental Health Awareness: Many struggle with anxiety and depression. Acknowledging these concerns and offering mentorship helps them build resilience.
  20. Be the Mentor You Wished For: By embodying a trusted mentor role, you can build a loyal and passionate Gen Z team willing to support you.
