Work Ethics
Work Ethics

Have you ever tried to work with or to do business with someone who didn’t seem to take interest in the job/business or did not care about you? Perhaps you didn’t go back to that person because you did not like the way you were treated. When you work with someone or own a business with someone, “bad work ethics” like this can affect your career or business. Strong work ethics encourage you and your fellow colleagues/employees/subordinates to face difficulties and situations effectively and to be best at what they are doing.

Work ethics are values based on hard work and diligence. Work ethics include not only how one feels about their job, career or vocation, but also how one does his/her job or handles responsibilities. This involves attitude, behaviour, respect, communication, and interaction – more of how one gets along with others. So why work ethics?

  • Your performance depends on it.
  • Satisfaction is derived from it.
  • Employers seek it.
  • Career progression is the fruit of it.

Here are five factors that demonstrate strong work ethics:

Being professional:
Being professional includes everything from how you dress and come to work to the way you treat others. It encompasses all the other elements of strong work ethics.

Integrity:
Integrity stretches to all aspects of an employee’s job. Co-workers value the employee’s ability to give honest feedback. Clients trust the employee’s advice. Supervisors rely on the employee’s high moral standards.

Dependability:
Dependability is when you can be relied on to keep your promises. You are always on time for meetings, and deliver your work on schedule and on budget.

Sense of responsibility/dedication:
When the employee feels personally responsible for his/her job performance, s/he shows up on time, puts in his/her best effort and completes projects to the best of his/her ability. The employee does not stop until the job is done.

Emphasis on Quality:
Some employees do only what is given to them, just enough to keep their job intact. Employees with strong work ethics care about the quality of their work.
They put in great effort to produce great work. The employee’s commitment to quality improves the company’s overall quality.

Determination:
You don’t let obstacles stop you. You know your job well and you work towards it and provide innovative ideas.

Discipline:
An employee with good discipline stays focused on his/her goals and is determined to complete the assignments. Your clients, colleagues and all the people you interact with trust you to do everything you say you will.

Sense of Teamwork:
An employee with a high sense of teamwork helps a team meet its goals and deliver quality work. These employees respect their peers and help where they can, making collaborations go smoother.

So now you can tell, someone’s work ethic is a very important part of their character.
If one has good work ethics, you can always assume that this person is going to be reliable, trustworthy, and efficient in what they do as in work, or anything. If someone has bad work ethics, then you can basically tell that they are going to be lazy, uncaring, and untrustworthy.

Without good ethics, you can most certainly guarantee that you will not be too successful in any career or job. Work ethics are truly what build someone’s character and with good work ethics, you can be rest assured to make your life better.
